Sump pumps are a last resort solution for water removal from a basement or crawlspace drain system. If the ground around your house slopes away nicely, your drain system can be set up to carry the water away from your house. However, many houses sit on level or nearly level ground. The only hope of draining water from around the foundation is with a sump pump.

A sump pump consists of a submersible pump (we use only Zoeller brand pumps) and a collection bucket (a 'sump'). Much like your toilet tank, a float valve triggers the pump to turn on when the water level reaches a specified height, emptying the sump. A battery back up system allows the pump to run even if the power to the house is lost.

Most sump pump problems are caused by switch burn out. Sump pumps can run for years without problem and many failure problems can be traced to the use of a sump that is too small. In this case the pump turns on and off too frequently wearing out the switch.
